Frequently Asked Questions
What is Peaceful Harbor all about?
Peaceful Harbor began with the simple idea that we all need to find that "peaceful harbor within." Entering into that state of mind is easier when you are getting regular massage. Peaceful Harbor Massage Therapy has convenient hours, and is available in my studio in Amherst, NH, or at your home in the vicinity of Amherst (in the Milford, Brookline, Hollis, Mt. Vernon, Bedford, Merrimack, NH areas) Whether it's your home or my studio, you can be sure that you will enjoy subdued lighting, relaxing music, pleasant aromatherapy, a cozy table warmer and soft linens that contribute to the relaxing ambiance that defines Peaceful Harbor. What should I expect if it's my first massage?
Upon arriving, you will be asked to fill out an intake form which includes important medical questions.
Please click here to see our health form. You may print it out and fill it in before arriving to save time.
I will go through the form with you, going over any special considerations or concerns, and answering any questions you might have. Afterwards, I will leave the room and you will be able to disrobe and get onto the massage table, covering yourself with the top sheet. I will ask if you are ready before re-entering the room, and then the massage will begin. At any time, you should feel free to ask questions or make comments. Generally, other than asking about pressure or instructing you to turn over, I will not ask you a lot of questions. However, it is YOUR MASSAGE, and if you wish to chat throughout the whole thing, that's OK. Most people begin to zone out after a few minutes, and that's OK, too.
What are the benefits of massage?

When should I not get a massage?
If you have any of the following, you should not presently have a massage:
* Fever
* Any infectious disease
* Systemic infections
* Severe cold/flu
* Fracture, bleeding, burns
* Acute injuries
* Cancer
* Open skin lesions or sores
* Blood clots
* Untreated high or low blood pressure
If you have any health concerns, it is always prudent to check with your health professional before getting a massage.
Should I undress completely for the massage?
The most important thing is that you are able to relax and feel comfortable during the massage. Most people disrobe completely, since that allows for better access of all muscle groups, but others choose to keep their undergarments on. At all times, you will be draped appropriately with a sheet, and at NO time will your private parts be exposed or touched. If you choose to keep your undergarments on, modifications will be made to massage over them. If you are receiving a Thai massage, you do not disrobe. You should wear loose comfortable clothes such as sweatpants or yoga pants and a tee shirt. Seated (chair) massage can be done while you are wearing your street clothes.
What parts of my body will be massaged?
A typical full-body massage includes (while face up) the feet, legs, arms, head, face, neck and shoulders, and (while face down) the back of legs and back, including the glutes (buttocks). Work on the abdominal area can be done on request. Again, you will be draped appropriately. Please let me know if you would prefer not to have work done on any of these areas. You WILL NOT be touched on or near your genitals or your breasts. Your massage will be immediately terminated with full payment due in the case of inappropriate behavior. I only perform therapeutic massage services.
What oils or lotions are used?
I generally use Jojoba oil or Coconut oil on the body, and Biotone lotion on the hands and feet. Both jojoba and coconut oil are great for the skin, have a nice glide for massage, and don't leave you feeling too terribly greasy after your massage. I do occasionally use other types of oils or lotions, though, so please let me know if you have any allergies, particularly nut allergies, as many oils are derived from nuts.
What about aromatherapy?
I believe that aromatherapy adds a lot to the experience of massage. I only use real essential oils in a diffuser to scent the air; I do not like the artificial scents in many scented candles, etc., so I don't use them. There are many scents and blends of essential oils available. I am happy to customize the aromatherapy for you. Just let me know what you like or don't like, or if you have a sensitivity to something, and I will modify what I use accordingly.
How about music?
Music is another important factor in your massage experience. I have many different CDs of massage music, and I try to vary the music so you can try out different ones with each massage, if you like. On the other hand, if you have a favorite, please let me know and we can play that one! It's your time, your massage, and I want it to be a pleasant experience for you.
What should I expect after the massage?
When your session is over, I will let you know quietly, inviting you to take your time getting up. You should get dressed and come out of the treatment room. Unless you have pre-paid, it is at that time that you will pay for the massage. I will give you some water to drink and take with you. This is a good time to schedule another appointment, if you so desire.
Immediately after the massage, you will probably feel very relaxed and somewhat sleepy. Within an hour or two, you may feel more energized and balanced. The next day, especially if we have done any deep work on your muscles, you may feel a bit sore. The soreness can be minimized by drinking plenty of water and, if necessary, taking a bath with Epsom salts. Let me know how you felt following your massage; that will help us to tailor your next massage to maximize the benefits and minimize discomfort.
What forms of payment does Peaceful Harbor accept?
Cash, checks, MasterCard, and Visa are accepted. If you are purchasing an Instant Gift Certificate or Book Online, we only accept credit cards for those services.
